Wood County government entities collected more than $750,000 in sales tax revenue for the April reporting period.

The report from the state comptroller’s office issued last week shows that the six cities plus the county earned $759,427. The June report represents primary sales tax collected by merchants in April and reported to the state in May.

The same time last year the seven entities earned $643,040.

Only one entity, the city of Quitman, saw a slight decline from a year ago. The city earned $70,391 compared to $71,369 in June 2020.

But for the year the city remains well ahead of 2020 with collections of $430,593 compared to $409,447 in 2020, a gain of 5%.

The six cities each collect a 1.5% sales tax on top of the state’s 6.25% tax. The county collects a half percent on top of that for a total tax rate of 8.25%, the maximum allowed by law. The rate outside cities is 6.75%.

Mineola saw its June sales tax income jump 20% from last year, with collections of $229,169 compared to $190,197. For the year the city’s collections are ahead almost 10% at $1,280,455 compared to $1,170,819. One third of that amount goes to fund the Mineola Economic Development Corp.

Alba collections hit $27,539 in June compared to $16,431 at this time last year. For the year the city has earned $133,153 for a gain of 12% over 2020.

Winnsboro collections of $133,926 for the month are up 3%. The gain for the year is 16% for $750,667.

Yantis has received $53,563 so far this year, up 22%. The June rebate from the state of $8,964 is up almost 28% from the $7,014 received a year ago.

Hawkins showed an 85% gain for the June report with receipts totaling $57,609 compared to $31,042 last year. That brings the yearly total to $216,823, a jump of almost one-third.

The county’s June collections rose almost 18% to $231,827.

Sales tax income for the year is $4,105,124 for the county and six cities combined. At this time last year revenue totaled $3,685,464.
