Commerce nips Quitman Lady Bulldogs, 36-35
After a tough home loss to Union Grove Tuesday, Quitman’s Lady Bulldogs dropped a 36-35 decision to Commerce Friday at Ballard Gym.
The evenly fought ball game saw the teams tied at 18-18 at intermission. Quitman took a 28-24 lead into the final quarter, but the Lady Tigers put up a 12-7 fourth quarter advantage for the win.
For Quitman, Ava Burroughs was unstoppable with 20 points on 8-13 from the field and 4-7 from the free throw line. She also had 11 rebounds and two steals.
Ashley Davis added six points while Maddy Pence added eight rebounds and a pair of steals. Kaysi Parker had a good defensive game and cleared the boards for eight rebounds.
After opening district play Tuesday on the road at Mt. Vernon, the Lady Bulldogs will host Mineola Friday in another district encounter. They will play a third district game Dec. 21 at Harmony.
Over the Christmas holidays, the Lady Bulldogs will travel to Como-Pickton Dec. 28 and play at Longview Spring Hill Dec. 29. District play picks back up Jan. 2 at home against Mt. Pleasant Chapel Hill at noon.
