Classic films to be screened at Select

With no new content from studios hitting movie theaters, Lake Country Playhouse and The Historic Select Theater, in conjunction with Jericho Productions in Tyler, will be presenting a full weekend of great films.

Ranging in age and style, the oldest film is the 1935 swashbuckling classic “Captain Blood” starring Errol Flynn, while the most recent is “Monster Dog,” starring Alice Cooper, which was made in 1984. Beginning at 7 p.m. on Friday, July 10, a total of 12 movies will be screened, including two midnight shows, one Friday and one Saturday.

The films Friday are 7 p.m. – “The Amazing Mr. X” (1948, thriller), 9 p.m. – “The Spirit is Willing” (1967 comedy) and 11:30 p.m. –  “Beware the Blob” (1972, horror).

Saturday, July 11, will feature at noon – “The Son of Monte Cristo” (1940, swashbuckler), 4 p.m. “Captain Blood” (1935, swashbuckler), 7 p.m. – “Carefree” (1938, song and dance musical comedy), 9:30 p.m. “Charade” (1906 classic thriller) and midnight – “Monster Dog” (1984, horror).

Closing out the festival on Sunday, July 12 will be at noon – “Silver Spurs” (1943, western), 4 p.m. – “They Call Me Trinity” (1970, spaghetti western), 7 p.m. – “The Jade Mask” (1945 Charlie Chan detective thriller) and 9 p.m. – “Dressed to Kill” (1946 classic Sherlock Holmes thriller).

Prices range from $5 to see a single movie, a day pass for $15 to see all films that particular day, $30 for a weekend pass to see every movie in the festival and a VIP pass for $50, which includes entry to all 12 movies, a goody bag with cool local stuff, one small drink and popcorn per movie and a private tour of the 100 year old Historic Select Theater. Only 12 VIP passes will be available.

The festival will be hosted by comedic emcee Eric Nivens of stage, screen and voice acting fame. Also in attendance on Saturday will be Brad Maule, best known for his portrayal of Dr. Tony Jones on “General Hospital” from 1984 to 2006. Several vendors will also be on hand selling nifty merchandise at the rear of the auditorium between films.
