City studying request to exempt carts

A request to allow the use of golf carts on city streets in October could come before the Mineola City Council in December.

Derrick McCann made one of two requests for off-street vehicles to be allowed for persons with no other means of transportation.

Mayor Kevin White said the city has been looking into the matter, including contacting cities that have rules about such vehicles.

One of the biggest criteria for cities that do allow golf carts on city streets is the requirement for a drivers license. McCann is unable to obtain one, which led to his request, as the cart is his only means of getting to the grocery store and pharmacy.

A separate request was made concerning riding lawn mowers, and White said no such vehicles could be allowed.

He said Mineola is a general law city which falls under state law and is limited in changes it can approve.

Charter cities have more latitude in passing laws, he explained. Those are cities with more than 5,000 population which have adopted a charter through an election.

White suggested the city attorney could explain the city’s options in December.
