Burroughs’ career night paces Lady Bulldog victory

In the plush surroundings of the Winona gymnasium, a huge third quarter proved to be the difference as the Quitman Lady Bulldogs took their second district win, 69-36 Jan. 5. Quitman put up 24 third-quarter points to just seven for Winona to pull away and ice the game for the Lady Bulldogs.

A career night for Quitman junior post Ava Burroughs sparked the Lady Bulldogs. Burroughs scored 15 of her career high 32 points in the third quarter. Burroughs also added 16 rebounds. Quitman’s Kynlee Love scored six points, but it was her solid defense and eight assists that helped make a difference.

Senior Lindsey Hornaday added eight points and led a spirited Lady Bulldog team with great defense, getting eight steals. Maddy Pence turned in another stellar night hitting for 11 points with three triples. Freshman Ashley Davis had another solid outing, especially on defense with five deflections, four steals and a blocked shot.

“I thought we came out and played slow and down to our competition in the first half, Quitman Head Coach Blake Hamrick said. “The second half was night and day and we were able to do the things we know we should be doing. Any district win is a good win, but we have to work on being more consistent as a whole.”

The Lady Bulldogs took a 16-10 first quarter lead and extended that to 28-19 at the half. After the big third quarter, Quitman led 42-26. Quitman got eight more points in the final quarter from Burroughs, and Carley Spears hit a big three-point shot with just 2:30 to go to put an exclamation point on the Lady Bulldogs’ win.

After a Tuesday night home contest this week with the state’s fourth-ranked Winnsboro Lady Raiders, Quitman will host Mt. Vernon in a big contest Friday at Ballard Memorial Gym. A Quitman win could lead to a playoff opportunity down the road.
