The Quitman Bulldogs controlled the boards and the score in a 75-56 trouncing of Carlisle to earn third place in the Quitman Invitational Tournament last week.

The Bulldogs defeated Como-Pickton 66-46 in the opening game followed by a 59-33 romp over Grand Saline. The Bulldogs fell to Pittsburg 51-25, but followed with the big win over Carlisle.

The Bulldogs were determined to make up for the loss to Pittsburg and started the game against Carlisle on fire scoring 21 first quarter points. Levi Thompson had another outstanding game scoring 10 points in the first stanza. Thompson had 32 points in the game scoring from long distance with five triples, and he was unstoppable driving the lane.

Brady Floyd had another consistent outing at point guard and added 10 points. Floyd is relentless in driving to the bucket and dazzles opponents and fans with his ball handling abilities. More than once did Floyd make moves which left Carlisle opponents on the floor.

Bulldog Justin Matthews had a solid outing grabbing rebounds and adding to the Quitman scoring efforts with 14 points. Matthews has become an important cog in the Bulldog machine. He adds toughness in the lane, as do Ethan Presley, Garin Kisinger and Landon Richey.

Post play for the Bulldogs has opened up scoring opportunities for the Bulldog perimeter players, and their defense has limited opponents’ number of shots at the basket. In the Bulldog wins, the inside play on defense has been successful in limiting opponents to one shot.

Quitman pulled ahead in the second quarter behind Thompson’s 14 points with Matthews adding four more. At the half, the Bulldogs led 38-25. In the third frame, the Bulldogs lead was cut to 10 points at 55-45 going into the final quarter.

Jack Tannebaum put in a three-point bucket to put Quitman ahead 51-37 with 2:50 left in the third quarter. Thompson added a driving lay-up at the buzzer.

In the final quarter the Bulldogs scored 20 points to just 11 for Carlisle.

The Bulldogs earned the third place trophy, and Thompson and Floyd were named All-Tournament.

The Bulldogs are 11-12 on the season and began district action Jan. 4 at Mt. Pleasant Chapel Hill. Quitman will be at home Jan. 7 against Winona.
