The Quitman Bulldogs got off to a good start in District 13-3A action with a 58-48 win over the Harmony Eagles last Tuesday at Delbert Ballard Gym.

The Eagles took an early 8-4 lead, but buckets by Landon Richey and Garin Kisinger tied the game at 8-8. The Bulldogs pulled ahead 10-8 on a driving lay-up by Brady Floyd. The Bulldogs never fell behind the rest of the game.

The Bulldog full-court press was a problem for Harmony as the Bulldogs’ relentless pressure led to numerous Eagle turnovers, giving Quitman some easy buckets. The score after the first quarter found Quitman with a 15-10 advantage.

In the second quarter, Justin Matthews hit a bucket giving Quitman an 18-16 lead. The Bulldogs went on an 8-0 run to put the Bulldogs up 24-16. Floyd scored as the half ended giving Quitman a 26-18 lead.

Levi Thompson got the hot hand in the second half. In the third quarter Thompson scored 13 of his 26 points. Thompson started the second half with a long triple making it a 29-18 edge for Quitman and followed with another steal and score giving the Bulldogs a 31-18 cushion.

The Bulldogs were up 31-22 when Thompson missed on a triple but followed his shot to gain the rebound and score making it 33-22. Harmony fought back to get within 41-34, but Ford Tannebaum’s three-pointer with 52 seconds to go in the quarter gave Quitman a 44-34 edge. Floyd hit on a free throw followed by a Thompson score and the Bulldogs led 47-34 going into the fourth quarter.

The Bulldogs kept up the pressure in the fourth quarter with Thompson scoring a lay-up at the buzzer to give Quitman the 58-48 win. The Eagles had opportunities to close the gap, but only hit on 6-14 free throws in the final eight minutes.

Thompson’s 26 points led the Bulldog scoring while Floyd added 10. Once again the play of Ethan Presley, Richey, Kisinger and Matthews on the boards made a big difference in Quitman’s ability to control the boards.

The Bulldogs were set to host the Quitman Tournament Dec. 28-29. District play will continue Jan. 4 at Mt. Pleasant Chapel Hill.
