Bulldogs fall to Waskom in area round

An exciting season has ended for the Quitman Bulldogs as they fell in the area round to Waskom 51-44 in front of a packed crowd at Union Grove High School Friday night.

Waskom took a quick 2-0 lead 15 seconds into the game, but Quitman came back on a triple by Hunter Jacobs to go ahead 3-2. After Waskom took a 4-3 lead, Levi Thompson stole a pass and scored on a lay-up giving the Bulldogs a 5-4 edge.

Quitman went on a 10-2 run on a bucket by Jack Tannebaum followed by a triple from Thompson who added a jump shot with 27 seconds left in the quarter. Quitman led 15-8 after one period.

The second quarter found Waskom playing tough defense, holding the Bulldogs to seven points in the quarter while the Wildcats scored 18. Waskom went to the locker room at the half with a 26-22 lead.

In the third quarter the teams battled evenly with tough defensive play. With Waskom leading 28-27, Quitman hit on three consecutive three-pointers, two from Thompson and one from Brady Floyd. Quitman was leading 33-28 when the Bulldogs were called for a flagrant foul. Waskom’s D.J. Foster hit the free throws. Quitman did not score again in the quarter as the Bulldogs missed four free throws in the final minute. 

Going into the final quarter Waskom held a 35-33 lead. Tyler Davis put the Wildcats up 38-33. Jacobs scored a bucket cutting the lead to 38-35 followed by a Thompson score to make it 38-37.

Waskom went on a 7-3 run to take a 45-37 advantage and proved to be just enough to subdue Quitman. With Waskom leading 45-37, Floyd hit a pair of free throws to cut it to 45-39. Waskom hit a pair of free throws to make it 47-39 with 35 seconds left. Jacobs hit on a triple cutting the score to 47-42 with 25 seconds to go, but it was not enough as the Wildcats went on to record the victory.

Thompson led Quitman with 20 points and Jacobs added nine. 

Waskom moves on to the quarter-finals against district foe Jefferson, a 56-52 overtime winner over Mineola.

Quitman ends the season with an 18-18 record after making the playoffs for the first time since 2015 and securing the first playoff win in over a decade. 

Coach Brandon Fields’ team will return all but seniors Jack and Ford Tannebaum and Matthew Smith. Returning will be Thompson, Floyd, Jacobs, Garin Kisinger, Carter Smith, Ethan Presley, Landon Richey, Noah Emmons, Dalton Crowson, Justin Matthews, Thomas Sebedra and Cason Johnson.
