The Quitman Bulldogs saved their best for the final game of the season, turning to the passing game for a 53-14 win at Winona last Thursday night. The win gave Quitman a 4-6 record for the second consecutive year.

The Bulldogs lost five district games in a row but played well on both sides of the ball and kept Winona from any serious threats. The Bulldogs led 34-0 before Winona scored on a 70-yard kick-off return as time ran out in the first half.

The Bulldogs used classic ball control to dominate. Quitman added a deadly passing game with quarterback Kamron Crocket having a stellar performance. Landon Green, Mikey Pickering and Carson Dickens ran tough behind a great effort by the offensive line.

Dickens had his finest offensive game of the year for 112 yards on nine carries while Green added 76 yards and Pickering 36 yards on four carries. Crockett was almost perfect, tossing 9-10 completions for 191 yards and a school record five touchdown passes.

“It’s always good to end the season on a winning note. I am proud of the way our guys came out and got after it. We were able to throw the ball and our running game was very effective Thursday night,” Head Coach Shane Webber said. “Crockett and our receivers all did a great job as did the offensive line on their blocking assignments.”

The Bulldogs scorched Winona’s defense for 352 yards on offense.

The Bulldogs took the opening kick-off and moved methodically down the field, scoring on a Green five yard run with 8:15 in the first quarter for a 6-0 lead. On the first play of the second quarter, Crockett found a wide-open Hayden Batchelder in the end zone for a score. The Carlos Flores point after was good and Quitman was up 13-0.

On the Wildcats’ next drive, Quitman recovered a fumble and drove for another score. A Dickens 57-yard jaunt highlighted the drive. Flores’ kick made it 21-0 with over seven minutes to go in the half. With 1:18 left, Crockett tossed a 10-yard scoring pass to Pickering and the Bulldogs led 28-0.

The Bulldogs added another big play with just 10 seconds left on a pass from Crockett to Thomas Sebedra, 76 yards for a touchdown making it 34-0. The only defensive lapse was a special team’s gaffe when Winona got loose on the ensuing kick-off and ran 70 yards to score as time ran out, leaving it 34-7.

Ethan Presley had another solid defensive game with a pair of sacks and several tackles behind or near the line of scrimmage. He also got into the scoring parade with a touchdown catch from Crockett from five yards out. The score put the ‘Dogs up 41-7 with 3:37 left in the third quarter. Winona got a score with 2:25 to go in the third quarter on a 58-yard pass play.

Crockett added another TD in the fourth quarter with a 40-yard toss to Brady Floyd making it 48-14 followed by a 15-yard scoring run by Garin Kisinger with 5:27 to go, making the final 53-14.

The Bulldogs also had penalties wipe out scores on a long pass to Floyd and a pick-six by Klayton Meadows.

“I feel good for the kids getting that last win going out on a high note and taking care of business at Winona. We had opportunities this year. We beat the teams we thought we could beat and should have beaten a couple more,” Webber noted. “Our ultimate goal was to get in the playoffs and we were short of that. It hurts but we are still building a program. Our JV went 7-3 and should have been 9-1 and our eighth grade averaged 42 points a game and had a good year. The future looks bright for our program.”

In district play, West Rusk defeated Edgewood 49-42 to nail down the district championship followed by Grand Saline in second, Edgewood third and Troup fourth for the playoff teams.
