The Quitman Bulldogs pulled out all stops, but still came up short falling to the Kemp Yellowjackets 55-45 in their last home game of the season Friday night. At press time, the Bulldogs were headed to Scurry-Rosser to finish the season.

A talented Kemp squad, just one game behind Edgewood for the top spot in District 12-3A play, found a Quitman team far removed from the team they whipped 57-15 just a few weeks ago.

This time, the Bulldogs came out to start the scoring on a three-pointer by Garrett Taylor at the 6:18 mark of the opening quarter. Taylor hit another trey and Garrett Peek added a bucket, but Kemp took a 16-10 first quarter lead.

The Bulldog defense really showed up in the second quarter holding the high-flying Yellowjackets to just three points while adding 10 of their own to come within 20-19 at the break. Josh Medlin pumped in a three at 6:07 left in the quarter to cut the lead to 16-13 followed by a Peek triple to tie the game at 16-16. The teams traded free throws to make it 17-17 before Jace Reid hit on one beyond the perimeter for a 20-17 Quitman lead. Kemp scored at the end of the half to make it 20-19.

Both teams upped their game in the second quarter with Kemp scoring 21 points to Quitman’s 16. After falling behind 25-22, Quitman’s Peek hit on a trey and a steal ending in a layup to give the Bulldogs a 27-25 advantage. The Bulldogs hit on three more triples by Taylor, Peek and Wacey Warren. A three-pointer and a short jump shot put Kemp up 40-36 going into the final quarter.

With Quitman down 48-39 with six minutes to go Josh Medlin popped in a trey to cut it to 48-42. After a Kemp field goal Taylor hit a three making it 50-45. Taylor ended the night with 15 followed closely by Peek’s 13 with Medlin adding six, Farmer four, and Ried and Warren three each.

Quitman is now 5-8 in district action and 14-16 on the season.
