An Alba-Golden school bus carrying students to a UIL academic competition in Canton was involved in a head-on crash on FM 17 shortly after leaving the school campus Saturday morning.

No serious injuries were reported.

According to the Dept. of Public Safety, the bus was headed south on FM 17 south of the Sabine River bridge in Van Zandt County when a northbound vehicle failed to drive in its lane and impacted the left front of the bus.

Nine students were transported to Christus Mother Frances hospital in Tyler with minor injuries and later released.

The driver of the Hyundai Elantra was also taken to the hospital.

The crash occurred about 6:45 a.m.

AGISD Superintendent Macie Thompson issued a public statement: “Thank you to the UIL sponsors, district staff and first responders who arrived quickly on scene to take care of our students and those involved in the accident. Our students were in very good hands this morning. We are very thankful that the injuries of the students and bus driver were not any more severe than they were. Thank you to those in our East Texas community and across the state who have reached out with prayers and well wishes for our students and staff. I ask that you please continue to pray for healing for those who were involved in the accident today.”
