After game twice delayed by rain, Mineola runs away from Quitman
The Mineola Lady Jackets dominated Quitman with a 13-4 District 13-3A softball win Thursday evening in Emory at Rains High School. Wet grounds in Mineola and Quitman made it necessary to move the game to the Rains softball complex which features artificial turf.
Carmen Heim pitched for Mineola and did a great job holding Quitman bats to just four hits. Quitman went scoreless in the first inning. Ashley Davis doubled, moving Maddy Pence to third base. Lady Jacket catcher Jaycee Smith gunned down Pence on a pick-off throw to Brittany Pickle at third.
Mineola came back to score two runs in their half of the first inning. A double by Lauren Simmons scored Kaylee Aguirre and Alyssa Lankford, giving the Lady Jackets an early 2-0 lead.
Quitman came back to score one run in the second inning, but Mineola scored two more to take a 4-1 lead going into the third inning. Mineola could have scored more if not for a great play by Quitman centerfielder freshman Addie Marcee.
With the bases loaded, Mineola’s Alana Galaz hit a low line drive on which Marcee extended to make a highlight diving catch just above the ground for the final out of the inning.
Quitman came back to tie the score at 4-4 on two hits, three walks and one hit by pitch. Reiny Luman got the big hit, banging out a double for a pair of RBI.
Mineola came back strong in the bottom of the third after the first two batters went down on a pop up to second and a strikeout. Pickle walked and Heim got her in with a single. Heim and Aguirre both scored and Mineola led 7-4 going into the fourth inning.
Heim settled down on the mound and put the Lady Bulldogs down offensively, getting eight consecutive batters out until an Alexis O’Neal single in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Mineola added three more runs in the fifth inning after a walk, an error, a bunt and one hit added scores to make it a 10-4 game.
Lauren Simmons got the single which scored two of the runs while Emily Wiley’s bunt scored another run.
The Lady Jackets polished off the win with three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Quitman was unable to score in the top of the seventh inning, giving Mineola the 13-4 district win.
