A-G Lady Panthers sweep Boles

The Alba-Golden Lady Panthers came out with well-focused energy in the opening set of their sweep of the Boles Lady Hornets last Tuesday. The match was the first of the second round of district play and was a revenge meeting as Boles had taken the first match-up in September.

Behind a 6-point opening service turn by Skyler West, the home side jetted out to an early lead. Cacie Lennon, who played well above the net most of the night, generated three of those opening points with a drop shot and two kills – one which was burying an overpass.

Kamrin Wright registered some solid play in the first set. She contributed two kills and an ace to keep Boles at bay.

The whole side was active.  An emphatic combined block by Lennon and Hailey Crutchfield notched a 10-point lead, at 17-7. Crutchfield – likely the most improved of the Lady Panthers thus far this season – served back-to-back aces to finish the first set, 25-10.

The second set was a much more competitive affair. Although Alba-Golden opened up a 4-point lead midway through the set, which came on a high-velocity kill shot from Lennon on the left wing, Boles came back.

The set was tied eight times, the last time at 22 all. A Kalli Trimble ace and three scores from Lennon (two kills and one drop) took the set, 25-22.

The roles were reversed in the third set. Boles came out strong and took a 4-point edge at 10-6. After tying the score at 14, it appeared that the momentum had shifted far in Alba-Golden’s favor when Crutchfield scored with a crushing block. Unfortunately, the call was reversed for a net infraction.

The service game and sheer hustle kept the set a point-by-point contest. In the endgame Alba-Golden used service aces by Erin Langston, Trimble and West to secure the win. A hard kill shot by Lennon, a combined block by Crutchfield and Trimble and an assist from the rafters helped to rally the Lady Panthers.

Upcoming matches hosting Como-Pickton and at Cumby precede the next opportunity to see the Lady Panthers in action. They host North Hopkins on Friday, Oct. 21 at 4:30 p.m.
