Mineola Lady Jackets have beaten the top team in District 14-3A for the second straight year to open the state basketball playoffs.

The Lady Jackets topped New Boston 53-44 Monday night in Pittsburg for the bidistrict title to advance to the area round against Waskom, a 42-39 winner over White Oak, later this week.

Mineola established the lead early and did not trail after an early 5-3 deficit.

Each time New Boston made a run, the Lady Jackets had a response, including key baskets down the stretch.

Mineola was forced to rotate players as the fouls mounted on both sides.

The first quarter ended with Mineola leading 12-5.

New Boston closed to within 14-13 only to have Mineola reel off three straight baskets.

The Lady Jackets led 20-17 at the half.

The Lady Lions managed to creep within 24-22 after Mineola got two baskets to open the half. Kyra Jackson scored on a drive, Carmen Carrasco hit a jumper and Macy Fischer, Sophia Hogue and Carrasco each converted on 1-2 free throws to push the lead to 31-23

It was 32-27 after three quarters.

New Boston opened the fourth period with a pair of free throws, with Fischer answering with a basket and free throw. A New Boston lay up made it 35-31, and that’s as close at it got.

Jayla and Kyra Jackson hit threes on either side of a New Boston layup, and Fischer added a pair of free throws to give Mineola a double digit lead at 43-33.

New Boston had one more run left to get within 48-42 with 2:03 to play. Two baskets and a free throw from Jayla Jackson pushed Mineola to its final total and a second round playoff date.

The Mineola win gave District 13-3A a sweep in the first round as Winnsboro, Chapel Hill and Mt. Vernon won their games handily.

The area championship game is set for Friday at 6:30 p.m. in Hallsville.
